My weekend with three princesses without help

"I don't know how you can juggle between work and three children!" is a common remark I get from my friends. But I think I would not be able to do so (mind you - without any helper) if I had no family support from my in laws and my hands-on husband. Because of them, I never really had to take care of them all by myself as they are always ready to assist whenever I need them to - just open my mouth and ask - that's all I need to do. (Yes, I am indeed blessed)

Of late, I have had a few experiences whereby I have to spend my weekends without my husband when he travels overseas for assignment. For the first time when I had to do it last year, I freaked out. Imagine being out and about with three princesses i.e. 8yo (special child), 6yo and a 2yo alone! I have to start planning our full day plan even as early as two nights before where I have to visualize our day out and work out every single details in my mind. (The kan-cheong side of me unleashed)
And guess what? It is not that tough after all. I totally think that it is doable for any mum who acts as the "bad cop" in the house. You know what I mean? Here are a few tips I listed down which helped me to draw out my day out alone with three children. Hope these tips help you at some point in time to challenge your motherhood to another level. LOL

Tip 1: Dress comfortably

Ditch your high heels and put on the most comfortable outfit as you will have no one to help you when you are putting on your pairs of lavish (yet complicated) heels, remember? I will choose to wear pants/jeans (with pockets) and comfortable blouse. Remember, the pockets come handy to keep handkerchief, small toys, your car keys, car park ticket, etc.

Tip 2: Pack necessities

As I have a 2yo baby, I will make sure that I have her necessities such as wet tissue, diapers, a set of clothes & milk powder in both her diaper bag (or any bag that you usually use) and my Longchamp sling bag respectively. As such, I can choose to travel light (with one bag) or travel with both bags depending where I go. Whereas, my toddlers would have their water bottles carried by themselves at all time. (Make it their responsibilities to undertake these tasks! You would have one less thing to carry with you.)

Tip 3: Plan your route

I am sure that there are more things you want to do even when you are managing them alone. Well, plan it well I.e. where you should bring them to. I will not go to places where requires me to park far away and walk in the open. It will only expose us to dangers such as snatch thief or reckless driver. Hence, my choice is always either a neighborhood café or a shopping mall. As such, I would have a peace of mind where I have eliminated some of the risks that I may expose them (and myself) to.

Tip 4: Always communicate with my girls before we start our journey.
My 6yo had asked me many times "Mummy, how can you manage three of us alone?" and I told her that "Of course I can do it if you cooperative and be a good girl. So are your sisters".
Fret not of telling your girls that it is challenging to bring them out but you would still want them to have a fun weekend but they need to follow rules. And spell out the rules... I do that even with my 8yo special child even though she might not understand fully of what I have just spelled out. But they need to 'work' together with you in order to have a stress-free day out, right?

Tip 5: Shh Shh (wee wee) first.
Photo courtesy of makchic.com showing the best baby room in shopping mall. Pictured is Parkson 1-Utama.

Don't wait until nature calls! It is far more challenging to bring all three girls to loo if you don't follow tip #3.
Shopping malls are best as there are always spacious baby rooms that I can find where I can change my baby and also get each of my girls to go wee wee.
So remember (1) to shh shh before your start your day out, (2) to shh shh when you reach your destination, (3) and shh shh before you leave your destination. As such, you don't have to stress when one girl is eating, and another girl telling you that she has an urgent nature call.

Tip 6: Always use your stroller/ trolley

Wherever I go, will always make sure I use my stroller where I can keep my baby safe and also to help carrying my barang-barang (essentials). My other two girls will each assign one side of the stroller bar/handle and their hand can't leave the bar/handle no matter what.

This is my rule whenever we are out and about. When they wander off, they will be given warning and informing how dangerous the action is. If they are not following this simple rule then they may not get to be out and about with mummy as it is dangerous.

Of course I believe that this practice should start from young. Just like how my kids know that they need to be on car seats when they are travelling out. There is absolutely no exception.

Separately, you gotta make sure that you know how to use your stroller and able to set it up and keep it FAST. As you wouldn't want to be busy figuring how to use it in the carpark and leaving your children in the car unattended to. My choice is always a light-weight umbrella-fold stroller (similar to the picture).

Tip 7: Keep your trip out short and brief. Stay focus.
I know that we always have tones of errand we need to run when it comes to weekend. But when you are alone, you need to plan smart. Try to keep your trip out brief and leave the shopping to weekdays (during lunch time and right after work) or use online shopping. That is because it becomes even more challenging and dangerous if you were to take care of your children and your shopping bags. A nice meal out or a quick shopping is alright.

Tip 8: If none of the above helps...
I know the above tips may sound easy but it may be tough for some mothers/fathers. If you are not playing the role of a "bad cop" in the family, you would have difficulties putting some of the above tips in practice.

Well, if none of the above helps, then you probably should consider staying home over the weekend. What to eat? Order your takeaway meals from one of the operators in the market like #foodpanda. It is very convenient with small delivery fee. Buy your groceries online like what I did with #TescoMalaysia online store. You know... you can survive at home with these helps.

Lastly, don't under estimate your motherhood/fatherhood capabilities. Anyone can do a great father or mother without a helper tagging along all the time. If haven't done it does not mean you can't do it.
Bottom line is you should always see it as a fun chore spending time with your children rather than a torture task.

Have a joyous parenthood!

XOXO.

Pump On The Go!

When I knew I needed to go on a week-long business trip to Paris, this business trip bothered me a lot.

The fact that my baby is only 8 months old and I am still nursing her, I was under stress (by myself) thinking how to continue my pumping routine while juggling travelling, meeting, conference etc. Alright. This initial part is not the most difficult part. The most challenging definitely is how do I bring back all my produce after my trip. I don't want to trash my 'hardwork'!

While I try to Google and read up various articles or insights from mums who have succeeded the above mentions missions. I think I only got a better ideas after reading many sources. Hence, I told myself that I need to share my entire preparation process if I made it. And here I am, proudly to share with you that, I brought back over 100 Oz of golden drops after my trip! See picture!

OK now! The most essential to ensure I can continue pumping is the pump!

1) Breast Pump
After my preloved Spectra M1 broke down, I was using a loaned pump from a friend. Prior to this trip, I decided to invest in two pumps.
One of it is a brand new #Spectra 9 Plus. It is a handy pump which can last 4.5 times of a 30-min pumping regimes and it is quiet. I have not regretted since I purchased it from Lazada. The deal was superb!

The perfect partner for Spectra 9 Plus is none other than my #Freemie storage system. Without Freemie, I would have missed many pumps. Freemie enables me to pump while working, in a cab, in a flight, even when dining.

Spectra 9 Plus + Freemie Storage System
While I think Spectra 9 plus and Freemie are good enough, my kiasu-ness pushed me to get a pre-loved manual pump. This pump served as a contingency pump in case my battery operated ones fail me. And trust me, it is the best RM50 spent on a preloved Avent breast pump!

This pump is useful especially when my Spectra 9 Plus battery was drained! Most importantly, its suction is close to my baby suction and was able to help removing any clogged milk ducts that I had. It worked wonders, really!

Avent ISIS Manual Breast Pump (Pre-loved)

Alright. Pumps checked! Next on...

2) Storage
I prepared both storage bottles and storage bags. Storage bottles are always with me especially when I am in transit. I brought on board with me the smaller bottles that fit 4 Oz of milk. And I had 8 of them with me. Why is it important to have so many? Not all but some airlines would not allow you to have any liquid content of more than 90ml, expressed breast milk (EBM) included.

However, when it comes to proper storage, I used storage bags instead. I used to think I need all 12oz bags. But in the end, I took with me all different sizes i.e. 12 oz, 10 oz, 7oz. And it is so handy!
When I have more produce, I use the bigger bag. When I have less, I use the smaller bag. I don't need to wait until my bags are filled or thinking that it is a waste for not filling it up.

It is essential to freeze my EBM as soon as I can so my EBM are always freezing cold. That is why you will see the photos of my frozen EBM are in bags of different sizes and brands. Practicality comes first. I don't mind of the brand.

3) Cooling Agents
This was the biggest headache! How do I keep my EBM chilled when I am in transit? Most difficult of all is how do I transport it back and having it still intact?

I bought a Coleman Cooling Bag (handy & stylish!)
Coleman 15L Artic Rainbow Shopping Cooler

And I had cooler bags and Techni Ice with me.

How many to bring? Depending how many you think you need. The following are what I had with me with all my EBM.  It was good enough to keep some of my EBM remained frozen and some thawed but chilled.

Techni Ice

4) Wrapping Essentials

I have read some articles where some really hardworking mothers wrap every single Frozen EBM in a layer of plastic then a layer of newspaper. Frankly speaking, I did not do that. But I brought along the following items to help in string-wrap my Cooler Bag with Frozen EBM and Ice Packs. It worked well too!

With all the essentials, I was set to pump on the go! I pumped literally everywhere i.e. in the flight (on my seat), in the boarding area, in the cab, in between meetings. I will always have my ponco with me wherever I am pumping.

Oh yeah! One more important arrangement is to be in touch with you hotel (accommodation) to alert them that you would need to use their freezer. I have their agreements before I leave KL so that my EBM can be freeze as soon as possible without any hassle.

The hotels that I stayed in (Hotel Baltimore Paris and Chateau d'Ecoublay) were very accommodative. They briefed their front desk staff of my need and allocated a space in their freezer for my "properties". To ensure that others are aware of the content (my EBM), I even printed labels in French to indicate it clearly with my contact details on it. Well, there was no missing EBM. Guess I have done it right!

So... after I filled a breastmilk bag, then I would quickly send it to the hotel to freeze it as frozen EBM is easier to manage than a chilled ones. It is more lasting too! Fret not about awkward moments of having male attendants attending to your EBM. Just think of your lil' one at home who needs these for the week(s) to come, then you will be okay!

On the check-out day, I would then retrieve all frozen EBM and start packing it nicely into my Coleman Cooler Bag. I first laid a layer of ice packs, then followed by my frozen EBM. If you find any empty pockets, fill it up with your towel or sweaters. (Some mothers are very hardworking where they would wrap each EBM with a layer of plastic then newspaper. But I did not bother and it was okay for me!)

Finally, I will leave the techni-ice on top of the coleman cooler bag. I then string-wrapped my cooler bag with a Fragile label.

There I am - was ready to head home with my "golden drops" wrapped nicely.

Before I left the hotel, I expressed my gratitude towards the hospitality that Hotel Baltimore has extended to me by writing them a simple note and gave them a box of chocolate. I too left a thank you message to their FB account to compliment them for their assistance.

I think they have helped me significantly and should be appreciated. As such, I hope that they will continue to assist other mums who may be traveling like I did in the near future.

With this successful experience of mine, I am now ready for another business trip this month. This time is a 10-day trip! I will not quit breastfeeding (for now)! Nothing can come in my way!

Getting To Know More About #OKU Card in Malaysia

What is an OKU Card / Card for People with Disabilities?

Frankly, I was against the idea of applying my girl an OKU Card as we did not want her to be treated "different". Unfortunately, it is mandatory for PPKI students to be certified "PWD" (People with Disabilities) to be able to enroll into a PPKI class, hence I started finding more information about OKU card in Malaysia.

On the web, you will find some information but I am doing a compilation from various sources on the most updated information. Hope it helps.

First! The address of Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Kuala Lumpur on some websites is not updated. This is where you can apply for an OKU card for whose residing in Kuala Lumpur

Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat WP Kuala Lumpur
Tingkat 9. Grand Season's Avenue
No 72, Jalan Pahang, 50564, Kuala Lumpur
Tel: 603 2612 4000
Fax: 603 4042 8185

Once you come to Level 9 of Grand Season Hotel, you will see this signage.

The operation hour of JKM, Kuala Lumpur. Both operation counters and office.

I found this chart is quite useful as it shows you the proper way of applying an OKU Card.

Here's the link to download OKU Card Application Form

(Left) Below diagram shows you the required photo for the application. Well, they accept digital copy which I managed to email across. The officers there are willing to help and are flexible.

(Right) It summarizes the basic documents that you need for new application and renewal of OKU Card.

But please do note that it is important to keep an original copy (or a coloured copy) of your OKU Card Application Form as schools do not need a copy or your OKU card but the application form.

Here are OKU categories for your reference:

DE - Hearing
BL - Sight
SD - Speech
PH - Physical
LD - Learning Difficulties
ME - Mental
MD - Multiple Disabilities

You can read more details of the definition of each category here: http://www.jkm.gov.my/content.php?pagename=pendaftaran_orang_kurang_upaya&lang=en

Special Education in KL - #PPKI

PPKI - Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi is a supporting system that is offered in selected government schools in Malaysia to assist Special Need students in their education. Have you heard of it?

Well, I haven't until I come across this PPKI signage at SK Batu KL and that's when I started googling for more information. Unfortunately, detailed information is not avail to me from the official website. I gave up searching at some point and started looking out for private institutions such as private schools and homeschools.

After hearing from various resources and of course the fee of private educational centres has becoming a burden now that we are expecting another baby in the family. That's when I asked for some guidance on various educational related FB groups about PPKI classes again.

To my surprise, a satellite city like Penang has better supporting system for such information. Also through the Penang group, I got to know some of the benefits about #OKU card. I will touch on the OKU card application process later.

To enrol your little one into a PPKI class of your selected school, the student needs to hold an OKU card. OKU card is issued to children or adults with challenges. In this case, my girl has learning difficulties (Global Development Delay) which is one of the many challenges listed.

You can follow the usual procedures of applying for three preferred schools from March onwards two years before he or she turns 7 years old.

There are quite a few documents that school needs for each school enrollment. Here is a list which I got it from Jabatan Pendidikan KL for your kind reference.

Here I am also sharing with you the list of schools in KL that offer PPKI classes.

PPKI classes (in my understanding) are classes conducted (in selected government schools) by trained special need teachers who would teach students of various ages based on their progress. However, not all schools are well-staffed with this type of teachers for all subjects. Some PPKI schools may only have such teach for 1 or 2 subjects.

However, what matters to me really is that these teachers are trained to teach and love our special children. The speed of our children' progress should be least of our priority. Don't we just want our children to still enjoying his or her studies? We should celebrate every little milestone in our children life.

Well, good news to parents who think otherwise - in the event if your child does progress fast and he or she may be recommended to the regular classes eventually. So.... don't worry!

Letter To My Late Granny 1

Hello 爷爷, 嬷嬷,

I came to Singapore for few days for a business meeting. Here I am extending two days here to pay visits to my friends - Joanne who had just given birth to a lovely boy named Leo; and of course to catch up with an old friend - Chelsea whom I have known for more than 10 years now.

This is little Leo in his sweet dream.

What amazed me is that I stayed
In a small boutique hotel called Grand Santa Hotel Lai Chun Yuen in Chinatown, and it brought me to find a Pun Yu Association around the corner. Look!

I went on a tour inside of the association and there were so many photos of the patrons of this association and their past activities. Although I did not relate to any of the photos nor activities but it feels close to my heart. It is because of both of you 爷爷嬷嬷 that we were told so much bout Pun Yu. Pun Yu is where both of you belonged and in Pun Yu Association I feel close "to both of you"!

I miss both of you so so so much!

Coffee of Hawaii at Damansara Perdana- a Deaf-In Business (DIB) Project

Two weekends ago, we came across this new cafe near Mum's Place in Damansara Perdana. We initially wanted to grab a bite at Mum's Place but the restaurant was not opened yet. We picked Coffee of Hawaii over the other nearby cafe as we were attracted by the vivid wall painting on the restaurant wall. (See above)

Coffee of Hawaii is the first Deaf-In Business. The restaurant offers the deaf community a place to try living and working like anyone of us. They are not only working at servers but some of those with baking and cooking skills are even working in the kitchen (The operator even told me that one of the bakers used to work in RT Pastry!). Trust me! They are working like any normal workers. In order for us to communicate with them, the considered business operator even had sign language chart painted on the wall (at the main entrance) and also at the reverse side of the menu. With these guides, you can definitely be able to communicate with them without any problems. Come! Let's learn a few sign language from the designated "tutor of Coffee of Hawaii - Mila"!

DIB offers lunch sets (see below) from Aloha Chicken, Spaghetti Chicken Ball and Chicken Wings. My husband ordered the spaghetti while I had the Aloha Chicken. The food is in decent portion and it tasted good too! The owner is also very nice to still offer us the sets although we walked in beyond 2.30pm. Oh yeah! The food ingredients used at Coffee of Hawaii are from Halal sources.

Spaghetti Chicken Ball which my husband had - RM12.50

This is my Aloha Chicken - RM14.50

There are also wide selection of desserts being sold at the restaurant such as Passionfruit Mousse (RM3 each cup),  Pineapple Cheese Cake (RM6 per slice), Passion Fruit Cheesecake (RM6 per slice) and many more. The operator even gave us some home-made passion fruits ice cream for us (and all the other diners) to sample. I must say it is very smooth and unique. (I realized that Hawaiian loves Passion Fruit! It is a great fruit packed with Vitamins and Antioxidant for sure!)

Lastly, it has to be their unique selection of coffee bean - air flown from Hawaii. For coffee connoisseurs, this is a must try item! If you like the coffee which you order, you can even buy a packet of the coffee bean back home.

Children of The Stars

I was touched with the article entitled "My child is not a weirdo, he is living in his own world, that's all" in Sin Chew Plus last Saturday (25 Feb 2012).

In the article, it shared about a touching movie starred by Jet Li "Ocean Heaven". Sam Wong (played by Jet Li) works in an aquarium and he struggles to look after his 21 year old autistic son Dafu (played by Wen Zhang). Sam has single handedly brought up his son since his wife passed away 14 years ago and looks after him day and night attempting to help him learn basic skills such as cooking, mopping, shopping, taking public transport in order to get Dafu ready for himself if he were to pass away one day. Sam Wong went through tough time and feeling helpless many a times.

I must say that I am fortunate that my children are healthy. But there was a moment where we suspected that our older child may have mild autism as she does not communicate as well as the other kids of her age. It was rather helpless when we couldn't find much information on how to deal with this question marks in our head. I am sure that we are not alone. I thought it would be nice for me to condense what I have read for the reference of those who are in need of assistance.

Based on KKM's data in 2010, there bound to be 1 autistic kid in every 600 Malaysian kids. If you have one, let me tell you that....autistic kids are children to the stars. They speak to the stars and only stars understand their language. To help these "children of the stars", we shouldn't attempt to bring them into our life, but we should try getting to know "their world" and getting to know them with passion and love by entering into "their world".

Understanding Autism
Autism often comes with mentally disability, hyperactive issue and emotionally unstable. The chances of autism to appear in the first boy is higher compared to the first girl by 3 to 4 times. Till date, there is not medication to cure autism. However, over the years, there have been numerous combination of language and emotional coaches have helped to stabilize the problem. The unstableness in the child can sometimes be soothed through physical, music activities.

The Causes of Autism
Over the years of research, it is proven that Autism does not cause by the background of the parents nor the way how the child was brought up. It is an inborn problem which occurred due to the development of nerve system or brain damage before he or she was born. If one of the twins is autistic, the chances of the other twin gets mild autism is between 10 to 20%.

If the mother got infected by measles during pregnancy, it increases the chances of autism in the unborn child. Other pregnancy complications such as incomplete brain growth (in the unborn child), early birth, etc will also increase the chances of an autistic case.

Ultimately, it takes lots of patience and love to learn how to love an autistic child. I am no expert in this area but I think the experts in Malaysia can help you to understand your child better. My advise is every child is unique in their own way. Never believe one professional even though he or she is good. Who else know your child better than you do? Their advices are merely reference and you should follow your heart.

Good luck and endure the process... it is all worth it.
